    • RAPID SHINING SERVICE

    • If your jewel looks dull or has superficial scratches, a rapid shining service is offered at Cartier boutiques  .

However, the rapid shining service is not provided for rhodium plated jewellery. Our Cartier jeweller will perform the following operations.

      1. Diagnosis

Cartier jewellers take the time to carefully examine your jewel in order to determine the work that needs to be done.

      2. Shining

This operation consists in giving the metal a shine boost using a felt disc and shining paste to make slight scratches present on your jewel however, do not disappear with shining. Polishing is recommended for this purpose.

      3. Cleaning

After the shining operation, your jewel is submerged in an ultrasonic tank filled with lukewarm soapy water.

Ultrasound waves clean the less accessible parts of your jewel (not including emeralds, pearls, and certain stones that are too delicate for ultrasonic cleaning).

      4. Technical and aesthetic control

The jeweller performs a final technical and aesthetic control in order to assure that your jewel meets Cartier’s quality standards.

    • POLISHING SERVICE

    • Our Cartier jeweller will perform the following operations.

      1. Diagnosis

Cartier jewellers take the time to carefully examine your jewel in order to determine the work that needs to be done.

      2. Polishing

This delicate step requires very specialised know-how in order to ensure that the original shape of the jewel is not altered.

Only experienced polishers are able to perform this service.

Polishers use brushes saturated with abrasive pastes. Three different pastes are used one after the other in order to obtain a reflective result.

      3. Cleaning

After the polishing operation, your jewel is submerged in an ultrasonic tank filled with lukewarm soapy water. Ultrasound waves clean the less accessible parts of your jewel (not including emeralds, pearls, and certain stones that are too delicate for ultrasonic cleaning).

4 Rhodium plating (if your jewel is rhodium-plated)

White gold is sometimes covered with a fine layer of rhodium to enhance the whiteness and brilliance of your jewel. Rhodium is a rare, precious and resilient white metal in the platinum family; it is therefore necessary to follow these additional steps:

      • Before polishing, eliminate rhodium, which consists in removing the layer of rhodium to obtain a neutral base for the new treatment.
      • After polishing, perform a rhodium bath so that a very thin layer of rhodium is deposited on the white gold surface after polishing.
      • This layer brings out the whiteness and brilliance of the surface.

      5 Technical and aesthetic control

The jeweller performs a final technical and aesthetic control in order to ensure that your jewel meets Cartier’s quality standards.

Warning: polishing removes material. It is therefore highly recommended to perform only two polishing operations in the lifetime of a piece of white-gold jewellery, and three in the lifetime of a piece of yellow-gold jewellery.

In addition, some scratches that are too deep may remain.

NB: it is technically impossible to polish white gold with a black finish.

    • RE-SIZING SERVICE

    • Re-sizing can be performed on a bracelet, necklace or ring. It consists in enlarging or reducing the size of your jewel, if possible. The re-sizing service involves an ensemble of meticulous and delicate operations that will be performed by Cartier jewellers.
Our Cartier jeweller will perform the following operations.

      1. Diagnosis

Cartier jewellers take the time to carefully examine your jewel in order to determine the work that needs to be done.

      2. Re-sizing

In the case of re-sizing a ring, jewellers traditionally use a very fine saw. They open the body of the ring. Using tweezers, they bring the two separate parts of the body of your jewel together. If the re-sizing operation is an enlargement, they add a piece of metal.
Then they solder the ring back together. In the case of a chain or a jewel with links, re-sizing consists in removing unnecessary links or adding new links.
Then the links will be reassembled.

    • RESTORATION SERVICE

    • The restoration service is recommended if your jewel has endured significant damage. This service involves an ensemble of meticulous and delicate operations that will return your jewellery to its original appearance. Our Cartier jeweller will perform the following operations.

      1. Diagnosis

Cartier jewellers take the time to carefully examine your jewel in order to determine the work that needs to be done.

      2. Restoration

Depending on the situation, restoration involves different steps:

      • Soldering consists in assembling two parts of a jewel. Using a blowlamp, the jeweller brings a metal part to a very high temperature. This metal part will serve as a bond. Upon completing the soldering step, the jeweller will submerge your jewel in a bath of acid to eliminate any oxidation.
      • Reshaping: the jeweller restores your jewel’s original shape using a boxwood mallet.
      • Setting concerns jewels decorated with stones. This is one of the most meticulous and delicate steps. It is often necessary to redo the prongs and bezel to create a secure setting for the stone.
      • Three types of settings are most often used on Cartier jewels.

      3. Polishing

This delicate step requires very specialised know-how in order to assure that the original shape of the jewel is not altered.
Only experienced polishers are able to perform this service.

    • REPRODUCTION PAIRING SERVICE

Our Cartier jeweller will perform the following operations.

      1. Diagnosis

Cartier jewellers take the time to carefully examine your jewel in order to determine the work that needs to be done.

      2. Reproduction

Reproducing a piece of jewellery varies according to the nature of the jewel and how it was made.
In order to best reproduce the model of your jewel, the Cartier jeweller will follow these steps:

      • Look in the archives of the Maison Cartier for the original design of the model and the matching cast.
      • Cast the metal of your jewel in the mould.
      • Assemble the different elements of your jewel by soldering.
      • Set stones, if your jewel is adorned with stones.
      • Engrave the individual number, the Cartier signature, etc.
